checks and balances

I tend to use different "tricks" to help keep myself on the right track. Like if I'm staring at a plate full of brownies, and they're looking real good. Chai isn't around, who's gonna know if I just snag one and run? Nobody would ever find out. How do I avoid filling my taste buds with happiness? Well here's a few things I try and do to help prevent myself from bingeing, or eating all the wrong foods.

1.) I ask myself if I'm really hungry, or if I'm just eating because I'm bored, or for comfort.
This one is the hardest, to actually take control of. But I'm getting a lot better with it. It's tough to actually stop and think, instead of the automatic reaction to having tasty foods available.

2.) I keep non-healthy/high-carb foods out of my apartment.
This one is MUCH easier to keep control of. As long as you're the one doing the grocery shopping that is. For me, it's pretty easy. I have the majority of the control over what foods come into the apartment, so it's real easy to just not buy potato chips, and buckets of cookie dough.

3.) Having a diet partner really freakin helps!
Chai is my savior on this one. If I'm feeling really bad, and all I want to do is eat Reese's Pieces until I pop, I send her a text message saying exactly that. I get the response back kicking me in the butt and basically calling me a failure if I do that. It works out perfect for me. It helps that we know each other so well, yknow her being my sister and all. ;) You have to find the person who will give you the correct response you need. The failure/calling me fatty really works for me. I hate failing. I'm sure positive re-inforcement works better for other people. But the main thing here, is having someone who you can talk to and will help you through the tough times.

4.) Keep something of all flavors handy.
By that I mean, something sweet, something salty, something crunchy, etc. Something for each craving. I like to keep a bag or pork rinds around for when I'm really craving chips etc. Some sugar free chocolates, or sugar free Jello for my sweets. The chocolates are better for a quick craving, there's no prep time, just open and eat. Salty is usually pretty easy too, especially if you love cheese and bacon as much as I do. One of my new favorite snacks is I take shredded cheese, put it on a paper plate(it must be coated!) shove that sucker in the microwave for about 2 minutes. The cheese gets crunchy, like a tortilla chip. I let it sit and cool for a couple seconds, then I add some salsa, bacon, chives, whatever you want, and it makes some tasty really quick nachos. low-carb style. :)

So there's a few things I like to do to help keep myself on the up and up with this low-carb stuff. They all seem to work quite well for me. What tricks do you use to keep yourself low-carb friendly, and away from bingeing on all those deliciously sugary/carby snacks?

awesome post.

And some good tips! I really really need to try that cheese trick.

Sometimes I want a munchable snack, but not pork rinds.

I think we'll have to write posts on tips for living with non-dieting peoples!

I just keep that stuff out of the house. The exception is dark chocolate, I don't over indulge in that, so it is safe to have in the cupboard.

If I want something sweet, I go out to a bakery and get a really good quality item and split it with DH.
As time has gone by, that really is all I need to satisfy the craving. I don't eat artificial sweeteners, so I don't sub that stuff for the real thing, which is what works for me.

It really helps when the people you share your living space with are on the same diet. It was working real well that way for a bit, but my roommate has been slowly leaning back towards "normal" eating habits. So she's bringing in some more of the non-friendly foods, at least they don't get along well with my waistline. lol Otherwise, I try and keep it out of the apartment as much as possible. Out of sight, out of belly.

Done. That's all I'm saying.
